Some of DC’s oldest trees shade the elaborate mausoleums and tombstones in this Civil War-era cemetery. Slate paths meander down to Rock Creek through gracious gardens with wrought-iron enclosures and benches that echo the Romantic style of the cemetery chapel designed by James Renwick Jr., architect of the Smithsonian “castle” on the Mall.
